We met in glorious sunshine on Sunday morning at Fielden Wharf in Todmorden. An incredible 35 volunteers along with staff from Calderdale Council turned out to help with the super effort of cleaning the Rochdale Canal towpath between Warland and Lobb Mill. Another two teams were tacking the towpath between Hebden Bridge and Luddenden Foot. As one of our volunteers said, at first glance you wouldn’t think it was too bad but when start looking you see the real story. In 2 hours we removed over 40 bags of rubbish including glass and plastic bottles, crisp packets and hundreds of cigarette butts.

But the Super Scoop (stop contamination of our pathways) Campaign is not just about removing litter, it aims to raise awareness of the issue of dog faeces on the Canal. Once again we ran out of flags within the first hour while marking the offending items! It is really disappointing that owners do not accept the responsibility for clearing up after their dogs but raising awareness will hopefully be the first step in cutting it out.

Thanks to all the volunteers that took part and to all those who signed up to take part in future events.
